Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) uses injections of your blood to stimulate natural healing so you can feel better without invasive surgery. Here, learn how PRP works and how it could help relieve your chronic pain symptoms.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is widely known for its anti-aging benefits and ability to treat many types of hair loss. But what you might not know about PRP is that it’s also a safe, effective treatment for many types of pain, including many types of foot pain and ankle pain.

At Forward Foot & Ankle, our team knows chronic pain affects people in different ways, and while surgery may be appropriate for some conditions, it’s not the right choice for everyone. In this post, learn more about nonsurgical PRP therapy so you can decide if it might be a good option for your chronic pain.

The science of PRP

Platelet-rich plasma is composed of two blood components: the liquid part of blood called plasma and tiny cell fragments called platelets. Platelets contain special proteins called growth factors that play key roles in healing.

While “regular” blood contains a set number of platelets, the platelets in PRP are much higher. As a result, PRP injections deliver high concentrations of platelets directly to a site of injury.

PRP treatment begins with a blood sample. We process that sample using a special method that separates plasma and platelets from the rest of the blood. The resulting concentrated mixture is injected into injured tissue, where growth factors stimulate cell growth and tissue regeneration.

PRP for chronic pain

Chronic pain injuries are associated with ongoing inflammation that hinders complete tissue healing. PRP addresses these issues by relieving inflammation and helping damaged tissue heal and mend over time.

Like other medical treatments, PRP is “dosed” individually based on symptoms, medical history, and other factors. Injections are performed on an outpatient basis, and best of all, they can be repeated as needed to promote optimal healing responses.

PRP is especially effective in treating soft-tissue injuries, including those associated with foot and ankle problems, such as arthritis, sprains, tendon injuries, plantar fasciitis, and bunions. While PRP can be a safe, effective alternative to surgery, it can also be administered to an injury during surgery to promote faster healing.

After a PRP injection, you can expect some mild, temporary soreness near the injection site. PRP typically takes a few weeks to stimulate healing and help relieve painful symptoms.
